"Gender refers to socially and culturally constructed differences between males and females found in meanings, beliefs and practices associated with masculinity and femininity" (Omadjohwoefe). This quote sums up where the concept of gender comes from. Gender is different than the term sex because sex is a biological term to differentiate between a man and a woman. Society has no affect on what sex. Gender roles in countries are all different.
The role of males in Nigeria is as it stands in most other countries, head of state. Nigeria has only had men in control politically. Also, the role of men socially and economically is to provide an work. Men do most of the production work such as working in mills, packaging, outdoor farming and crops, transportation, etc. While on the other hand, women are the lifestyle care givers. They do small productions such as working in outdoor farming and crops, handling children and home-life.

The description of what the male and female roles are in the Nigerian society sound a bit sexist and lack of rights for women, but in actuality women still have voting rights and are still involved with choices made in society. Women were actually a big part in the upcoming of Nigeria. While men were involved in labor trades, women worked to keep the economy growing by labor working, wage labor and employment.
Although women were/are considered indispensable with their roles in society, the many contributions of women in Nigeria was not recognized until the Decade of Women in 1976. That made it mandatory for government to recognize women's opinions in government decisions. To me, the Nigerian was were somewhat prehistoric. They are one of the slowest evolving countries when it comes to right and development of laws and regulation.
